Description
The Great House is a former cruck house that was significantly rebuilt in the 17th century and extended in the 18th century to create an L-shaped plan. Recent modernizations include rough-cast render and new doors and windows. The building has two storeys and is constructed of rubble stone. It features three end stacks, with the northern stack reduced in height, and a central ridge stack. The roof is covered with asbestos tiles and is hipped to the north. There are two modern lean-to porches and a random arrangement of windows of varying sizes and types, mostly from the 20th century. However, one 17th-century moulded mullion window remains on the east front, although it is partially obscured by a porch.
Inside, the house retains a good period interior, although modern flush doors have been installed throughout. A large cruck truss is still visible, and the collar of a second cruck truss is incorporated into the central stack. In the south room, there are high-quality ovolo-moulded beams. Adjacent to the central stack is a fine 17th-century dog-leg staircase, which features large newels, carved flat balusters, a closed string with ogee and ovolo mouldings, a deep moulded handrail, and a latch from a former dog-gate. It is noted that carved finials were reportedly removed many years ago.
