Description
The Church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building featuring a nave and a chancel with a lower roof. It has a large south porch and a west bellcote topped with a pyramid roof. The structure is built from rubble stone, with a plinth and buttresses, and has an artificial tile roof; the bellcote also has tile-hung sides. In the southeast corner of the chancel, there are two stones with crude carvings of male and female figures. The chancel's south wall includes a 13th-century paired lancet window made from a single block, while a further double lancet window is located next to the porch. The north wall of the nave features a Perpendicular style cinquefoil single light, and the south wall has a square-headed Perpendicular window with three lights, ogee heads, and a hood mould with head stops. The south wall of the chancel has a plain square-headed two-light window with a moulded mullion, and other lights date from the 19th century.
The porch roof, dating from the 15th century, includes king-post and arch-braced trusses with quatrefoil windbraces. Inside the porch, there are stone benches, a sepulchral slab with a raised cross, chalice, and missal, as well as a memorial tablet from 1724 with a framed inscription. The south door features a pointed arch with Perpendicular mouldings, while a 19th-century boarded door with elaborate wrought hinges is also present.
The churchyard contains numerous chest tombs and three 17th-century gravestones, one of which has a Latin inscription. The nave roof features 19th-century arch-braced tie-beam trusses, while the chancel roof has 15th-century arch-braced trusses and quatrefoil windbraces. A pointed chancel arch and 19th-century furnishings, including Godwin's tiled floor, are also present. The original south chancel door was blocked in 1877, and a 19th-century door was added to the north wall. The chancel contains a trefoil piscina and a stone pillar with incised symbols, including a large cross with ring and dot devices and smaller crosses in the angles, which may be pre-Christian with later additions or early Christian from the 7th to 9th centuries, although the upper portion is damaged. An octagonal font is also located within the church. The church houses two bells, one dating from the early 13th century and the other from the mid-16th century.
