Description
The Barn Range at the Great House dates from the mid-17th century and consists of five bays. The structure has largely been rebuilt with rubble walls, but original square-panel timber framing remains on the north side, which is now covered by two lean-to byres on either side of the central double doorway of the barn. An additional lean-to has been added to the south side. The barn features an iron roof and ventilation slits in the stonework. The timber framing includes our tiers with original horizontal boards that form panel infill for the lower tiers. The upper tiers have stave holes for wattle infill. The barn has tall jowelled wall posts, a tie beam, and collar trusses with two angle braces located below the collar. Some partition framing has been partially removed. The byres have cobbled floors, heavy square-framed and shuttered openings, and chamfered roof timbers.
