Description

Shire Hall, which includes a branch library and museum, is a two-storey building with a basement, featuring a nine-bay design. It has a tetrastyle Tuscan frontispiece, with ground floor loggias on either side, although these have been altered from the original scheme. The exterior is finished in stucco over stonework, with rubble at the rear and slate roofs. The building has a projecting eaves cornice that connects to a pediment, and there are blind panels above tall double-hung sash windows in the central bays. The three-bay wings are set back and feature Tuscan columns and plain entablatures for the loggias, along with original ironwork railings and doorways at the return angles of the forecourts. The rear of the building has twin hipped wings.

Inside, the spaces are simply designed with restrained classical detailing. There is a dog-leg staircase with a plain handrail, and the courtroom has a deep coved ceiling with some decorative plasterwork. The doors are six-panel designs set in panelled reveals. Much of the furniture in the courtroom is believed to be of a later date. Additionally, vaulted cells, which are now partly occupied by the museum, remain from the old gaol that was located on the site.
