Description

Castellmoch-fawr farmhouse is a two-storey building dating from the 18th century, located with its main elevation facing south towards a lawn and the River Tanat. The facade features three symmetrical windows and a central door, constructed from uncoursed quasi-rubble slate masonry that is thickly jointed. A brick cornice, which includes a course of bricks laid diagonally to create a dentil effect, crowns the structure. The roof is slate with a tile ridge, and there are small brick chimneys at each end.

The front windows are hornless sash types with 16 panes, set on sandstone sills and lintels. The window openings are dressed with brickwork, which is block-bonded into the masonry, while the door opening remains undressed. The entrance features a partially glazed six-panel door with an overlight, framed by a simple timber surround with pilasters and a cornice. The left gable of the front range is blank, while the right gable has two upper and two lower horned sash windows, each with 12 panes, also featuring stone sills and lintels.

At the rear, an older wing has a north gable with an end-chimney. The west elevation of this wing, which faces the farmyard, has been restored and includes two small dormers. The east elevation, facing the garden, consists of two gabled bays with casement windows and double French doors.

Attached to the rear wing are the stables, forming an L-shaped range with a single-storey elevation that has seven openings facing north towards the rear lane. This section is built of uncoursed slate masonry with segmental arches, a slate roof with a hip and tile ridge, and includes one window, one door converted to a window, and five doors, one of which is a pair of double doors. Part of the return elevation to the west is clad in boarding.

Inside the three-unit front range, a staircase is positioned close to the front, featuring a hardwood handrail that coils at the foot and thin square balusters. In the older rear section of the house, there are two ovolo-moulded beams with tongue stops. The stable range has trusses with cambered ties and king posts.
