Description

Hen Llys is a two-storey building with a cellar, constructed in squared rubble with red sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It features four bays, with the main entrance marked by a shallow porch in Tudor style made of ashlar sandstone. This porch has octagonal shafts that rise from angle buttresses, framing a wide moulded central arch. Above the arch, there is a coat of arms set in a panel that rises through the parapet, accompanied by an inscription that reads +ANNO 1898 DOM+. The coat of arms includes the motto CLEW AWYD CLEW HYDYR LLWYD.

The central three bays of the facade are gabled and separated by recessed narrow half-bays. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed, adorned with label hoods, while the central 4-light window above the porch features flattened ogee tracery. The fourth bay on the west end has a slightly jettied upper floor supported by heavy corbels and is topped with a stepped gable. A 20th-century extension has been added to the left, using similar materials. The building has paned leaded windows set into the stonework, with multiple margin glazing above the transoms. The eastern bay includes a crenellated two-storey canted bay with similar windows. The chimney stacks are characterized by diagonally set brick shafts flanking a central stack.

The eastern facade features a semi-external stack and a north end bay with a corbelled upper floor and a stepped gable. Although not accessible during the inspection in September 1996, it is reported to contain panelling and carved woodwork similar to that found in the nearby church.
