Description
4 Broad Street is a three-storey building constructed of painted brick with a slate roof. The two properties are separated on the ground floor by a passage known as Boot Street. Number 4 features a single window range, with a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor that continues from Number 3. The first floor has a canted oriel window with tripartite sashes, which was added in the late 19th century, and above it is a low 6-pane sash window, likely inserted when the roof was raised during the same period. Number 5 presents a three-window range, with two 12-pane sashes with flat arched heads on the left and a canted oriel on the right, also featuring a 12-pane sash window. The second storey has two 6-pane sash windows. A dentilled eaves band runs across the entire property.
At the rear, Number 4 has a short rubble and brick wing that is part of the original structure, featuring a tall stair-window at the angle. Number 5 also includes a short rear wing from the original building, with a doorway that has a six-panelled door and a high overlight, positioned towards the angle. Behind these, there is a later addition, likely built in the early 19th century, which consists of a three-storey, four-window range with outer doorways and 12-pane sashes (five windows between the doorways on the ground floor), along with 6-pane sashes beneath the eaves on the upper storey.
Despite extensive alterations to the ground floors of both buildings, they still retain parts of the original early 18th-century turned-baluster staircases in the rear wings.
