Description

History: Built as a pair of houses c1720-1750, and later adapted for commercial use: Nos 38-39 probably originally formed a single dwelling which was subdivided as 2 shops, but is now again in single occupation.

Exterior: Brick (rendered to No 37), slate roofs with coped gables and end wall stacks. 2 storeys with attics, each building is a 3-window range. Wide passage entry to left, and late C20 inserted shop fronts (of unsympathetic character); narrow shop-front in No 39 is a somewhat earlier type (probably early C20), and has stained glass in its upper lights. Upper windows are 12-pane sashes with cambered brick heads. Modillion eaves cornice. Each has 2 dormers in the roof, with segmentally arched heads and 2-light small-paned casement windows, with leaded lights surviving in Nos 38 and 39.

Listed as a pair of C18 town houses which retain some of their character in spite of unsympathetic alterations, and which form part of a group at the centre of the town.
