Description
39 Broad Street is a building that was originally constructed as a pair of houses between 1720 and 1750. It has since been adapted for commercial use. Nos 38 and 39 likely started as a single dwelling that was later divided into two shops, but it is now back in single occupation.
The exterior features brick construction, with No 37 rendered, and slate roofs that have coped gables and end wall stacks. The building has two storeys with attics, and each section has a three-window range. There is a wide passage entry to the left, and late 20th-century shop fronts have been inserted, which are of unsympathetic character. The narrow shop front in No 39 is an earlier type, probably from the early 20th century, and includes stained glass in its upper lights. The upper windows are 12-pane sashes with cambered brick heads, and there is a modillion eaves cornice. Each section has two dormers in the roof, featuring segmentally arched heads and two-light small-paned casement windows, with leaded lights still present in Nos 38 and 39.
This building is listed as a pair of 18th-century town houses that retain some of their character despite unsympathetic alterations, and it contributes to a group of buildings at the center of the town.
