Description
42 High Street is a pair of houses, now functioning as a shop and restaurant, built as part of a longer terrace that includes Nos 43-44. They were likely constructed in the mid-18th century but have undergone significant alterations due to changing uses. The property was owned by the Kynaston family, and title deeds from 1747 refer to it as a 'messuage, dwelling house or inn ... lately rebuilt.'
The exterior features two storeys with an attic, arranged in a five-window range. The buildings are made of brick with a slate roof; the brickwork of No 41 is painted, while No 42 is rendered with mock-timber cladding. There is a stack on the right-hand gable and another towards the rear of No 41. Originally, both houses had paired central doorways with an architrave and an entablature hood, along with lattice glazed overlights above panelled doors. One of these doorways still exists but is blocked. Modern shop fronts have been added to the ground floor on either side. No 41 retains two 12-pane sash windows with flat arched heads, while No 42 previously had similar windows that are now 2-pane sashes. The buildings feature a modillion eaves cornice, and hipped dormers in the roof contain 6-pane sash windows. No 41 has a short rear wing made of rubble, which was extended in the early 19th century by a warehouse range constructed of rubble and brick.
These buildings are included in the heritage listing despite 20th-century alterations, as they are 18th-century town houses that retain some early details and contribute to the character of the group.
