Description

3 High Street is a building that likely dates back to the 16th century. Originally timber-framed, it was refronted on a new alignment in the early 19th century. It may have once been part of a single house with No 4, and the current through passage might have been an internal feature. In the 19th century, it was extended at the rear with a single-unit cottage, and later included a warehouse and stable range that were used as club rooms for a time.

The main range has a short rear wing, which may have originally been a separate dwelling. This area was later expanded with an additional dwelling and a store-house range. The main elevation features lined-out render over brick and has a slate roof. The side wall to the passage reveals exposed timber framing. The building stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range, with a shop front inserted at ground level. The upper floors have four-pane sashes with steep cambered brick heads above and 12-pane sashes below the eaves. The timber framing in the side passage consists of three panels with heavy chamfered studs below the mid rail, and there is an ogee arched doorhead towards the rear.

Inside, the staircase features turned balusters and moulded square-section newels in the lower flights, while the attic has splat balusters. The roof shows clear evidence of the house being reconstructed on a new alignment and retains an earlier A-framed collar truss.

This building is of special interest mainly due to the partial survival of its original high-quality timber framing. Its history of successive reconstruction, including changes to the street alignment and extensions that filled the burgage plot, adds to its significance.
