Description

The White Lion Public House is a building that may have originally been a dwelling. It dates partly from the 17th century, with the rest being refronted in the early 19th century, possibly incorporating an earlier structure. The building features a timber frame that has been partly refronted or rebuilt in brick, topped with a heavy slate roof.

The plan is H-shaped, consisting of a central range flanked by two wings, which suggests a hall and cross wing arrangement. The left-hand wing is timber-framed and likely dates from the 17th century, although its facade was repainted during an early 20th-century restoration. This wing has a highly decorative appearance, with raking diagonal close-studding on the ground floor and chequerboard decoration below the window of the jettied upper storey. The gable features cusped quatrefoil panels and has a queen post and strut structure. Each floor of this wing has a 4-light mullioned window that dates from the early 20th-century restoration.

There is a long wing extending back from the left-hand side that incorporates service buildings, framed in square panels with brick infill. The central range and the right-hand wing were refronted or rebuilt in early 19th-century brick. The central section has a two-window range with a doorway to the right, at the angle with the right-hand wing. The windows are 12-pane sashes, with a flat-arched brick head above the lower window. There are two axial stacks, one at each end of the central range, and the right-hand wing features similar 12-pane sash windows on each floor. The interior has not been inspected.
