Description

A range of five attached houses with shops, now used as houses and offices, was built in the early to mid-19th century and altered in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and features a painted and plastered brick facade, with other areas finished in plaster, roughcast rendering, and weatherboarding, all beneath a slate roof. The main range faces west, with two stacks in front of the ridge and two behind (numbers 3 to 9). A wing extends obliquely forwards to the right end, also with two internal stacks (number 11). The building is two storeys high, with one house having an attic.

Number 3 has a plastered ground floor featuring an original 16-light sash window with handmade glass, and a similar sash window on the first floor, alongside a late 19th-century 6-light sash. There’s a 20th-century 6-panel door with a plain overlight, set within a plain doorcase, and a single stone step. Number 5 has a plastered ground floor, painted above, and includes an original 16-light sash window with handmade glass on the ground floor, two similar sashes on the first floor, and a 20th-century half-glazed door. Number 9 features a shop window with 30 lights, which is either restored or a reproduction, and a matching sash window on the first floor. It also has a 6-panel door with a plain overlight in a plain doorcase, and a single stone step. Number 11 has an original shop window with 24 lights, a similar sash window on the first floor, a modern (therm) window in the attic, and a 20th-century 6-panel door in a plain doorcase. The side return is roughcast rendered.

A 1827 map and a 1828 sale catalogue show this site was previously occupied by a brewery, and the street was then known as Cellar Lane.
