Description

Aberhosan Independent Chapel is a building constructed in 1860, featuring white-painted stucco and a slate hipped roof. It has a near square plan with three bays on the front and sides. The front elevation includes outer pilasters with plain block capitals beneath the eaves, and long arched side windows that have a central mullion and 16 panes. The center of the front has a small, simplified Palladian window, which consists of an arched section with 8 panes and a central mullion, flanked by three-pane sections. There is a replaced plaque below that reads 'Addoldy. Eglwys Annibynwyr Aberhosan Adeiladwyd 1860'. The central doorway is arched and rusticated, featuring a keystone and double panelled doors with long and curved panels at the top. All window sills are finished with stucco sills or strips supported by small brackets. The side walls have three windows each, similar to those on the front, with the left side being slate-hung. The rear of the chapel is constructed from rubble stone and is windowless.

The chapel is accompanied by a low white-washed rubble forecourt wall topped with slate coping, iron railings, and dog-bars at the front. The wall features plain piers with slate stepped caps and matching iron gates that have an unusual circular strengthening bar and scroll tops on the hanging and meeting rails.

Inside, the chapel has a square interior with a painted three-sided gallery supported by seven iron columns. The gallery front consists of long panels set on a modillion cornice and curves at the corners. The gallery pews are steeply raked, while the painted box pews are arranged in three blocks, with the front block widened into a convex curve to form a great seat. The pulpit is ornate, made of contrasting wood tones, and sits on a square base adorned with Gothic panels, including small painted quatrefoils. The pulpit features a heavy bookrest supported by two ringed columns, flanking a panel with painted Gothic ornament. The steps leading up to the pulpit have complex traceried rails designed with arches and lozenges. The low back of the pulpit is boarded beneath a horizontal panel with scroll ends and a pediment above, all set within a plaster arch with panelled piers. Dado boarding follows the line of the pulpit steps and continues around the interior. The ceiling is painted with a central roundel and diagonal ribs extending to four square fretwork panels at angles, with borders between the squares. The entrance lobby contains two doors and a central window featuring colored glass margins and lozenge panes.
