Description

Cae Carog is a three-unit house of one-and-a-half storeys with a narrow unit added to the left end and former stables and cart-shed adjoining the right end. It is constructed of shaley rubble stone on a plinth beneath a renewed and continuous slate roof, with a stone end stack to the left.

The rear elevation features a gabled projection to the left of centre, incorporating a lateral stone stack, and a further lateral stack to the right of centre built in stone with brick quoins. The front has a central entrance, possibly narrowed slightly, containing a boarded door under a timber lintel. Windows flank the entrance: a 16-pane horned sash to the left and a small 4-pane sash to the right, both with timber lintels and slate sills. There is possible evidence for a small blocked window to the far left. The upper storey contains two small gabled dormers aligned above the sashes, each containing a 2-light wooden casement window. The stable to the right has split doors under a timber lintel; above is a raked half-dormer containing a small 2-light casement, formerly a loft hatch. The former cart-shed has a wide opening with timber lintel, and the loft features continuous wooden glazing.

To the rear, a part-lit boarded door immediately to the right of the right-hand lateral stack leads into the parlour. Between the stacks is a small top-hung wooden window lighting the kitchen. To the left of the gabled chimney projection is a small opening, probably a ventilator to the former stable, with a narrow boarded door to its left and a small 2-light casement to the far left. The wall has been buttressed out to the right of the latter doorway for structural reasons. Six skylights pierce the rear roof pitch. The south gable end has two 2-light wooden casements flanking the chimney, which may replace a front window now blocked. The north gable, lighting the loft studio, contains a tall 3-light window with timber mullions.

Inside the front entrance is a stair-hall with a service room behind. In the left-hand corner of the stair-hall is a boarded door leading to a closed-string wooden staircase with a quarter-turn. The internal partitions are box-panelled, with some panels retaining wattles or laths, and old boarded doors throughout. Doorways from the stair-hall lead into the parlour to the left, the hall to the right, and the service room to the rear. The service room, now used as a kitchen, has a single spine beam to the ceiling and a slate floor. A second doorway leads from here into the hall, which has a large lateral fireplace to the rear with a shallow-chamfered timber lintel. The ceiling features two spine beams with ovolo-mouldings and run-out stops, and stop-chamfered joists. The parlour has a similar ceiling and a small plastered lateral fireplace with a segmental head, possibly of Victorian date. To the left of the parlour is a smaller room with a raised floor, small fireplace, and a ceiling with chamfered joists; it is thought to have been for an older person, perhaps a widow.

The upper storey has tie-beam trusses with collars and raked struts, beneath which are box-panelled partitions with central doorways. To the right of the staircase, a partition contains a doorway with a depressed ogee head, which led into a heated bedroom whose fireplace is now blocked. A doorway leads from here into the stable loft, where the partition with the house is of small-scantling timber-framing. Towards the gable end, stairs lead down into the former cart-shed.
