Description

The Former Flannel Exchange and Assembly Rooms is a two-storey building with a basement, constructed in the Greek Revival style and finished in plaster on brick. The main facade faces Back Lane and features hipped slate roofs with a blocking course and central panels above a plain cornice. The building has advanced end bays, a plain entablature, and twin pilasters, with a brick plinth at the base. The right bay displays Art Deco-style windows, while the left bay has modern windows set in a former cambered opening. The center of the building originally had a tetrastyle Greek Doric portico, which is now walled in. Flanking entrance porches rise through the entablature to form dormers and have corner pilasters. The left porch retains its original doorway with a window above a modern staircase, while the right porch features modern windows.

The right end elevation facing Broad Street serves as the cinema entrance and consists of three bays with three windows, with the center bay advanced. It has a cornice and parapet, along with a first-floor sill band. There is a modern porch and a stepped stone voussoir arched bridge, with flanking dummy windows set in original cambered openings. Above the porch is a three-light Art Deco window.

The left end elevation has five windows, with the center three advanced. It also features a cornice and parapet, along with dummy windows, some of which have modern insertions, and a first-floor sill band.

The rear elevation has been significantly altered by later additions but retains pilasters and entablatures similar to the front, with wings that are truncated on the right and an Art Deco window on the left.
