Description

The Stable Courtyard at Stanage Park is a building designed in a picturesque castle style, dating from the 19th century. The main structure is a rubble square coach-house featuring a battlemented parapet at the north-east angle. It is constructed of coursed rubble with some freestone dressings. The east side, which faces the park, has an advanced porch with a battlemented false parapet and a pointed arch doorway. Above this doorway is a blocked window with a Tudor hood mould, and there is a similar opening with a glazed sash on the north side. The west side has a cambered-head door with a blocked opening above it. A 4-bay buttressed wall with a stepped parapet at the ends and blocked slit windows continues to a loft at the end, which features a round corner tower, although the crenellations have been removed.

Inside the courtyard, there is a single-storey rubble structure attached to the south of the coach house, which has a modern roof. This structure continues around to the south side of the courtyard in a similar style, with a recessed centre. There is a square tower at the south-west angle that has a single door and window on the ground floor. A screen wall along the west side, which also has had its crenellations removed, features a flat-headed door opening. On the north side, there is a 4-bay slate-roofed timber-frame range with one plain and one stepped gable, and brick nogged timberwork above four boarded double door entrances. Outside, there are rubble stairs on the right leading to the left, and the courtyard is cobbled.

At the time of inspection in June 1985, the building was noted to be in poor condition.
