Description

The icehouse at Hillgate, likely built in the early 19th century, consists of a tunnel covered by a segmental or horseshoe stone vault, which was originally plastered, with earth heaped on top to create a mound. It measures approximately 12 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1.4 meters high. There are recesses with cast iron fronts on either side, set back 1.5 meters from the front. The passage is believed to have a chamber beneath its floor, although this is now filled in. The entrance features drystone wing walls and was once fitted with a timber door and frame within the arch.
