Description
The mile marker at Cilthriew is a cast iron structure dating from around 1830. It was established by the Turnpike Trust on a newly engineered section of road, which is still known as the 'turnpike', to help with the steep gradients leading to Kerry Pole, which is 463 meters high. The marker has a triangular shape and features a sloping top against a half-round backplate, although this backplate is now missing. The raised lettering on the marker indicates distances: on the left side, it reads "ANCHOR 4 - M / KNIGHTON 17 - M," and on the right side, it states "KERRY / 1½ - M / NEWTOWN / 4½ - M," with arrows pointing in the correct directions.
