Description

The Carreghofa Aqueduct, built to carry a canal, is located parallel to the Public Road, 700 meters west of Llanymynech. It features a riveted metal-plated trough with canted sides, which is supported by timber-capped longitudinal girders that have triangular braces. Beneath the trough, there are trabeated cast-iron supports that run down the center of the former double trackway. These supports include single and paired uprights with cross-brackets and flanged bases that are bolted to masonry piers.

The aqueduct has a splayed bull-faced masonry abutment with a ramped outer wall topped with stone cappings. A vertical joint separates the aqueduct from the brickwork of the adjacent road bridge. To the north, there are remnants of the canal approaches to a temporary aqueduct that was dismantled after the construction works were completed.
