Description
The by-pass pond and spillway with a sluice-gate located to the south of the upper lock chamber features a curving rubble revetment. The culverts are brick-lined and have repairs made in later 19th century blue brick. The spillway has been refaced using modern engineering bricks. In the center of the spillway, there is paddle gear, which operates a rack and pinion system built on a wooden frame with a separately braced ratchet catch.
