Description

The Upper Lock Chamber is a 19th-century structure featuring a curved, splayed east entry from the Ellesmere Canal, along with a feeder entry to the north. It has massive stonework quaysides equipped with ironwork fenders and curved insets that once held ironwork gates. Next to the single replacement lock gate, there is a notable example of Buck's patented paddle-gear, which is set into a stonework surround. This includes a pyramidal flanged ironwork frame with arched braces and rear brackets for the winding handle. The mechanism features a toothed drivewheel with a V-shaped pivoting arm that connects to the sluices in the lock floor.

The stonework quaysides of the lock chamber are complemented by double replacement gates at the west end, and there are ironwork vertical sluices leading to timber gates. The stonework revetments at the west end are faced with brickwork, and recessed stone stairs on the north side descend to a sinuous masonry catwalk below the embankment. A small rubble-faced dock curves to the west, reconnecting with the canal line above Bridge 95. An arched brick culvert is located next to the steps, along with an old ironwalk bollard on the north side.
