Description
The lock gates and paddle gear are located at a curved, splayed east entry from the Ellesmere Canal, with a feeder entry to the north. The structure features massive stonework quaysides with ironwork fenders and curved insets for former ironwork gates. Next to the single replacement lock gate is a notable example of Buck's patented paddle gear, which is set into a stonework surround. This paddle gear includes a pyramidal flanged ironwork frame with arched braces and rear brackets for the winding handle. It also has a toothed drive wheel with a V-shaped pivoting arm that is linked to sluices in the lock floor.
The stonework quaysides lead to the lock chamber, which has double replacement gates that close off the west end. There are ironwork vertical sluices connected to timber gates. At the west end, the stonework revetments are faced with brickwork, and there are recessed stone stairs on the north side that descend to a sinuous masonry catwalk below the embankment. A small rubble-faced dock curves to the west to rejoin the canal line above Bridge 95. Additionally, there is an arched brick culvert adjacent to the steps and an old ironwork bollard on the north side.
