Description

Old Elmtree Farmhouse is an L-plan house dating from the 18th century, featuring a main block aligned north-south and a rear crosswing at the south end. The building has rubble walling, and its original roof covering has been replaced with corrugated iron, hipped at the southeast corner. It includes brick chimneys and casement glazing, and is one-and-a-half storeys tall, with the upper windows blocked. The east elevation has a doorframe with a cambered head and a brick chimney on the north gable. There is a window on the south elevation with brick jambs and a brick chimney on the west gable. Lean-tos are present in the rear angle and at the north gable, connecting to an agricultural range.

The stone agricultural range also features a corrugated iron roof. It has four doors facing the farmyard to the north, with ventilation slits at eaves level, and a square window at both lower and upper floor levels in the east gable. The south elevation has altered doorways and windows.

Inside, the left room has a transverse stop-chamfered beam and exposed joists, along with a large fireplace. To the right of the doorway, there is a boarded partition leading to a wooden stair, beyond which is a small cellar and a large longitudinal chamfered beam. The rear (west) wing contains a stop-chamfered beam and a large fireplace with a cambered stop-chamfered bressummer. On the upper floor, the old roof structure is nearly complete, featuring A-frame trusses and two tiers of purlins, with blocked windows to the east. The agricultural range consists of three bays, with steeply-pitched kingpost trusses and raking struts, and the eastern bay is lofted.
