Description
The barn at Ffinnant is a six-bay combination barn, primarily weather-boarded, with a corrugated iron roof and a rubble plinth. Inside, the space is divided by square-panelled partitions. The east end features three full cruck couples of varying shapes and elbows, along with two-tier purlins and some later timberwork. This section has been extensively patched with brickwork.
The west end is box-framed and includes four trusses, featuring a three-bay hay barn with barn doors cut through; the purlins in this area are smaller. The three bays on the east side are believed to have been part of a former house, which likely consisted of an inner room or rooms, a hall, and an outer room. This section contains three cruck trusses, with a shared wall that is box-framed with the added barn part. The east gable cruck frame has straightish crucks with a chamfered underside. The second cruck frame has a short yoke at the top and originally included a collar beam; there is also a tie beam morticed into the crucks, along with marks indicating two doorways. The Royal Commission suggested that the end bay within these two cruck frames may have been divided longitudinally into two small rooms. The third cruck frame from the east has a short yoke but has lost its collar beam and tie beam.
