Barn at Pentre-isaf

The Barn at Pentre-isaf is a former farmhouse that was noted in 1989 for its external cladding of corrugated iron. The building features a three-bay south wing with box frame trusses and a rubble north wing, which includes a cartshed on the left and stables on the right. There is a broad arched cart entry that is partly blocked, made with red brick voussoirs, and slit ventilators are present for the loft. A modern brick range is attached to the barn.

Inside, the four-bay layout reveals the main interest of the building. It is constructed with three box-frame trusses, which include tie and collar beams with queen struts, as well as two cruck trusses. The plan suggests it was a true long house, with human and animal accommodation separated by a cross passage. The hall consists of two unequal bays, featuring a fine central cruck truss with arched braces. There was a dais partition at the north end, and the doorways to the inner rooms are still visible. Notably, a chimney was never added, resulting in smoke blackening on the timbers, and the building was never storeyed. At the lower end, there are passage partitions, with the southern one containing a doorway on the east side. The lower byre could also be accessed directly from the outside. An open panel in the south partition, which was never filled with wattle and daub, indicates that the passage may have been used for feeding.
