Description

Pentre-isaf Farmhouse is a building that dates back to before the 19th century. Originally, the earlier sections of the farmhouse were half-timbered, but much of this has since been covered with rubble and some brick nogging. The slate roof remains on much of the cross wings, and there is a fine stone ribbed stack for the chimney that heats the hall and east wing, which is contemporary with it. The west wing features brick chimney stacks and boarded eaves. A central dormer likely replaces an older one, and the entrance is now on the left side of the west wing, having previously been located beneath the chimney stack. The east wing has a doorway with cambered brick voussoirs and a small pane window, while the first floor of the west wing has small pane sash windows, with the lower ones blocked. The rear section of the east wing, which is a later addition, has close studding on the upper floor's east side and brick nogging with square panelling at the rear and west side.

At the time of inspections, the building was noted to be in poor condition. Internally, the central hall is small due to the large stone stack that was inserted around 1660. The ceiling has a curious camber, and the original square panelled end wall has been found embedded in the fireplace. A fine post and panel dais partition is retained, with visible peg holes for the bench; the cross beam and joists are deeply chamfered and simply stopped. The stairs, which used to be located to the north of the fireplace, have been reversed and now rise from the east wing. The ground floor of this wing features later ogee stop chamfers. At the rear, where a later lean-to has been added, the square panelled former external north wall of the hall is visible. Upstairs, there are half-timbered partitions and original roof trusses. The group value with the earlier house located downhill, which is now a barn, adds particular interest to the property.
