Description
The Powis Estate Sawmill, built with thin-coursed local sandstone rubble and topped with a slate roof, is a three-storey structure, including a basement. It features a six-window range that is aligned at right angles to the boundary wall. The entrance to the basement storey is located towards the left on the north elevation. Throughout the building, there are small-paned iron windows with cambered heads. The wide gable-end entrance has double doors and a loading door above, all framed in heavy wood and separated by a chamfered lintel. On the south side, there is an overshot water wheel made of cast iron and wood, which is fed by a cast-iron launder adorned with cast figures of animals and people. A gabled wing projects from the south side, added to accommodate a horizontal saw installed around 1890.
While remnants of the original power system, specifically a pit-wheel drive, can still be seen, most of the basement water-power machinery was updated during the 1890s. This includes two toothed wheels that transfer power to the main belt-drive shaft via a chain. Additionally, late 19th-century machinery remains on the upper floors of the mill, featuring a large horizontal saw with a log wagon and a circular saw-bench.
