Description

The building at Coed-y-dinas, which includes a slaughter-house, dove-cot, and smithy, dates from around 1840 and was part of a home-farm for the Powis Estate by the mid-19th century. It was partially remodeled in the 1870s as 'Lord Powis's Model Farm', but retains elements from the earlier farm layout.

The exterior features roughly coursed local sandstone rubble with a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a four-bay plan. The western bay contains the gable entrance to the slaughter house, which has a blocked window beside it. There is a single window with a brick arched head set high on the front elevation, and paired doorways towards the centre. The left-hand door leads to the dovecote and has a wooden dove-door panel above it. The right-hand door provides access to stairs; both doors are plank doors with simple voussoir heads. To the right, wide double doors with a segmental voussoir arch lead to the smithy, accompanied by a two-light segmentally headed window. A smaller, lower window is a later addition. Above the smithy, there are two windows immediately below the eaves, one featuring iron glazing bars with small panes.

Inside, the slaughter house retains a series of axial beams at varying heights for hanging animals of different sizes. The dovecote is lined with nesting holes in brickwork, arranged in sizes from top to bottom. The rooms above the smithy previously served as a bothy.

This building is an excellent example of a compactly planned and ingeniously designed multi-purpose farm-building, preserving much of its original character and forming part of a group of buildings on the farmstead.
