Description

The cowsheds at Coed-y-dinas are a significant example of late 19th-century model-farm architecture, originally part of the Powis Estate's home-farm by the mid-19th century. They were associated with plans for redevelopment in 1862 and 1870, although the full scheme was never completed. A substantial portion was built in 1872, and while the cowsheds have been remodeled more recently, they still reflect this historical context.

The structure consists of two single-storey ranges that intersect at right angles. Much of the exterior walling has been reconstructed, but the western elevation retains its original features, including a central round-headed doorway flanked by six slatted windows with flat brick heads, and an additional door at each end. The roofs are slate on the eastern range, with vents, while the western range has a corrugated sheet roof. The building connects to the barn and granary range through a continuation of the higher roofline over the louvre on the eastern range, creating a covered entrance to the farmyard.

Inside, the original layouts have been altered to meet modern farming needs, yet the original structure is partially intact. The western range features wide-span braced king-post trusses that define ten bays, while the southern range has thirteen bays. Overall, the cowsheds contribute to the impressive ensemble of structures at the farm.
