Description
No 2 Timber-yard Cottages, located at the Powis Castle Timberyard, were built as a pair of cottages of unequal size around 1830 to 1840. No 1 was extended around 1880 with a wide gabled range to the right.
The original range is constructed from rough random local rubble, while the later gable features roughly coursed and squared local stone, with dressed quoins. The cottages have slate roofs with brick star-shaped axial and side wall stacks. Together, they create a picturesque composition that incorporates simplified Tudor-Gothic details. The main range is one and a half storeys high and is symmetrically arranged in a two-unit plan with a central baffle entrance. Internally, the left-hand unit is No 2, and the right-hand unit forms part of No 1.
No 2 has a gabled porch that features a four-centred voussoir arch. It is flanked by two-light mullioned and transomed iron windows with small panes and drop-ended hood moulds. There are similar two-light casement windows beneath dormer gables, which have wide bargeboards with finials above. No 1 has a similar porch in the centre of its gable, flanked by narrow single-light small-paned windows (which have been renewed or inserted), and a similar two-light mullioned and transomed window above, also with a drop-ended hood mould. The gable features wide bargeboards with a finial.
These cottages are good examples of estate cottage architecture and are part of an important group of buildings at the Powis Estate Timber Yard.
