Description
The former saw mill is a single-storey building that features a main gabled mill range and a long lower gabled wing on the west side. Both sections have lean-tos on the north side and a mill race on the south side. Constructed of rubble stone, the main mill has a slate roof, while the wing and lean-tos are topped with corrugated iron roofs. The main mill extends on the east side and is slightly set back from an earlier wall on the south side.
The east gable end has late 19th-century walls made of snecked stone, with a weatherboarded gable that includes an offset loft door to the right and a fixed attic light above it. On the south wall, there is a cast iron breast-shot waterwheel, though its buckets are rusted and partly missing. Above the waterwheel is a penstock, with a narrow window featuring a brick surround beneath a former control rod that projects from the wall. The west gable end mirrors the east gable end in design. The wing sits above a plinth course on the south side, which forms the wall of the tailrace. A single window with wood mullions is located in the south wall, topped by a segmental brick head. The west gable end contains a low doorway under a brick segmental head, aligned with the saws and bench inside. Additionally, there is a wide inserted doorway in the north wall, next to an open-fronted lean-to.
The waterwheel axle is attached to gear wheels, pulley wheels, belts, and line shafting that distribute power throughout the mill. Inside the main mill, there is a long bench with rollers where timber enters through the east end. The wing contains a framework for the saw, with timber being passed out through the opening in the west wall. The main mill features a flagstone floor, while the wing has an earth floor. The north wall of the main mill includes two segmental-headed doorways leading to the open-fronted lean-to.
