Description
The building is a former water-driven corn mill, dating from the 19th century. It is two stories tall and constructed of coursed, rough-dressed rubble, topped with a medium-pitched old slate roof. The entrance front, which faces northwest, is symmetrical with three bays. It features a central entrance with an original recessed, boarded stable door that has simple decorative iron hinges and a pegged wooden surround. On either side of the entrance are two square, 2-light boarded windows. The first floor has three equally spaced square windows with 20th-century 6-pane fixed glazing. The ground-floor openings are topped with large dressed slate lintels, which are recessed slightly below narrow returned labels.
On the southwest side, there is a large wheel pit that contains an external pitchback and an iron-rimmed waterwheel approximately 4 meters in diameter. The wooden struts and paddles are still present, but there is no visible foundry plate. To the left of the wheel pit is a 2-light shuttered window, and the upper floor has three windows similar to those on the first floor. Both gable ends feature entrances; the southwest entrance is raised and has external stepped access with a boarded door and a modern metal handrail. The northeast gable entrance is reached by two worn steps and retains its original boarded stable door and pegged frame, with a lintel similar to those on the ground floor. There is a small square vent-light at the apex of the gable.
Inside, most of the machinery is intact, although much of it was replaced in the late 19th century. This includes an iron toothed wheel and four pairs of stones, along with overhead shafting and wheels on the first floor. There is also a sack hoist and wooden stairs, with plain pine joists supporting the ceiling.
