Description
The Wheel House, also known locally as a ginny ring, is an early to mid-19th century structure located at Ystumcolwyn Farm. It features stone piers and a corrugated iron roof. The wheel house is attached at a right angle to the third open bay of the barn, consisting of one short bay with rectangular piers and four canted sides on square piers that form an angled end, which was formerly used to cover the horse gang. Inside, a long tie beam supported by the rectangular piers carries long angled struts that form an 'A' frame, supporting the principal rafters. There is no remaining evidence of the overhead horizontal wheel that was used to harness horses to drive machinery within the attached barn. The open sides, originally designed for cross ventilation, have been partly filled with blockwork and corrugated iron.
The barn itself is constructed of dolerite with some brick and has a slate roof, which has been partially replaced with corrugated iron. It consists of four bays, featuring two tiers of ventilation slits on both sides. The barn has tie beam trusses with angled struts to posts that are set independently within the walls. The tie carries long angled struts and a double purlin roof. Additionally, the barn roof extends to the east over a driftway, connecting to a second, similar barn that is set at right angles.
