Description
The Brewhouse Range at Ystumcolwyn Farm is a farm and workshop building, believed to have served as the brewhouse for Ystumcolwyn, constructed in 1719 for the Williams family. It is made of local red brick in an irregular bond, resting on stone footings, with flush stone quoins at the northeast end. The building features a slate roof that was added around 1912.
It stands two storeys high and has a contemporary lean-to at the rear, which has been widened in stone, along with a one-bay stone-built rear wing at the northeast end. The front wall is two bricks thick and consists of eight window bays, with a three-course plat band. There are two doors with new arched heads and two vehicle access ways. At the center of the front wall, there is a stone panel inscribed with "W / A + M / 1719." The west gable is raised and coped, supported by ogee moulded kneelers and features a brick stack, along with two blocked windows on each floor. The rear wing also has a coped gable and an attic window in the east gable. A stock yard is located at the rear.
Inside, the ground floor is divided into three independent bays by brick partitions, while a timber partition separates the eastern unit, which has an upper floor that is cut away in an octagonal shape, possibly for a later grain dryer. The ground floor features stop-chamfered cross beams set closely together, which support a possible malting floor on the upper level. The roof is constructed with double purlins.
