Description

The stable building, dated 1721, forms a range constructed of local red brick in an irregular Flemish bond, with a hipped slate roof. A stone rear wall also exists. It is two storeys high, with a rear wing to the northwestern side, also with a hipped roof. A mid-wall plat band, three courses deep, steps up over the central opening, which features a parabolic brick arch on slightly raised brick springings. Above the arch is an inscribed sandstone panel reading W / A M / 1721. The first floor has square two-light windows, originally with flat brick arches, now mostly blocked and rendered. The ground floor has a window, door, window arrangement flanking the central arch, with later frames and overlights on the doors, and tall windows with rubbed brick arches. Inner openings are blocked. An oak cyma-moulded cornice runs along the building. The plat band continues around the western gable end, which has three blocked window openings on each floor. The eastern gable has an external staircase leading to the central door of the upper floor, supported by a stone substructure. The building has been altered: cross beams are present in the eastern bay, which originally housed stables, while the western bay is now used as a fertiliser store.
