Description
The Old Market Hall is a 2-storey, 5-bay black and white building featuring an open ground floor, although the southern bay on the east side is enclosed. It has a slate roof topped with an octagonal cupola that has small glazed panes and a weathervane. The eaves overhang, which is cut back at the ends on the east side, complements the structure. The southern gable is made of rubble, while the northern gable is constructed from red brick. The building showcases close studded timberwork with deep middle rails and chamfered bressumers supported by segmental arched braces. The windows consist of small panes with protruding frames that extend to the eaves level; there are three fixed windows on the west side and one on the east side, with the remainder being horizontally sliding sashes. The east side previously featured a boarded loading door, indicating its historical use as a wool store on the upper floor.
At the southern end, there is a low cambered arch made of voussoirs, with a timber head on the inner side. The northern gable is built in Flemish bond brick and includes a toothed band above the first floor, which has 12-pane horned sashes with flush frames and cambered heads. Above the paired cambered openings on the ground floor, there is another band course with voussoirs. Notably, at the northwest corner, there is a stone that is said to be the location from which John Wesley preached in 1748, 1749, and 1764.
Inside, the upper floor features a largely renewed 5-bay roof, with one truss that was previously used to partition off the gaol at the southern end. The interior also includes stop-chamfered beams and a modern staircase.
