Description
The Hollies is a three-storey building featuring scribed cement render fronts. Number 29 has one window and was formerly two storeys, while numbers 30 and 31 have two windows each. Number 31 is distinguished by rusticated quoins. The building has slate roofs and brick chimney stacks, which are modern for numbers 29 and 31, and bracketed eaves. The windows are mainly recessed sash types with various small pane sizes, although number 30 has modern windows. The first and ground floors display voussoirs and keystones, with the first floor detail appearing only on number 31. Number 31 also features Victorian splayed bays with dentil cornices and four-pane sash glazing.
The entrance to the building includes a round arch leading to a boarded door that opens onto a tunnel passage, from which number 29 is accessed. Number 30 has a square-headed entrance with a Victorian bracketed doorcase and a four-panel door, while number 31 also has a four-panel door.
At the rear, there is a partially cobbled yard. Number 29 includes a two-storey cross range with a rubble base, boarded and half-glazed doors, and casement windows. The rear gable end has a fireplace from a formerly adjoining range that extended to the rear of Picton Street. The rear of number 30 features a brick nogged timber frame with various casement windows; a full-height cross range added after 1887 projects from it and was once part of a network of small courtyards, as shown on a 1963 map. The ground floor is rubble, with brick above and brick nogged half-timbering on the second floor weaving loft, which includes louvred openings. The rear of number 31 has its square panelled timber frame fully exposed, with the second floor displaying diagonal braces and thinner scantling, likely indicating a weaving loft.
Contemporary railings at the front feature two tiers of finials that extend along the pathway to the tunnel passage door. The interior of number 30 has been modernized, while number 31 has been converted into flats, retaining panelled reveals at the bay windows.
