Description

Myrtle Cottage is a 19th-century building featuring a combination of painted brick, render, stone, and timber framing. It has a slate roof and brick chimneys, some of which are rendered. The cottage has a long, curved street frontage with a dentil eaves cornice and projecting gabled bays at each end. The design is symmetrical, with a slightly projecting central bay that includes a segmental pediment and an entrance with an arched head and pediment. On either side of the entrance, there are three grouped arched windows, a single arched window, and a door with an arched opening, triangular pediment, and a heavy label. The upper floor features a large Diocletian-style tripartite window. The gables have upswept roofs, and the dentil cornice continues for a short distance at the eaves level. There are large arched openings on the first floor, with the left opening partly blocked, and 20th-century bowed windows at the ground floor. The return elevations have full-height semicircular bays and a similar arrangement of arched openings. The rear elevation includes central garage doors with a taking-in door above and gabled dormer windows.

Stone Cottage, part of the same group, has timber-framed walls and stone plinths, with brick skin walls on the exterior elevations and an inserted ceiling of roughly chamfered timbers. Romney Cottage has been remodelled in the 20th century, and other interiors were not accessible during the 1995 survey. Myrtle Cottage has group value with Holly Cottage, Beech Cottage, and Roft Lee.
