Description
Jessamine Cottage is a Grade II listed building that forms part of a group including Primrose Cottage, Romney Cottage, Stone Cottage, and Myrtle Cottage. The building features a combination of painted brick, render, stone, and timber framing, with a slate roof and brick chimneys, some of which are rendered. It has a long, curved street frontage with a dentil eaves cornice and projecting gabled bays at each end. The design is symmetrical, with a slightly projecting central bay that includes a segmental pediment and an entrance with an arched head and pediment. Flanking this entrance are three grouped arched windows, a single arched window, and a door with an arched opening, triangular pediment, and heavy label.
The upper floor showcases a large Diocletian style tripartite window. The gables have upswept roofs, and the dentil cornice continues for a short distance at the eaves level. There are large arched openings on the first floor, with the left opening partly blocked, and 20th-century bowed windows at the ground floor. The return elevations feature full-height semicircular bays and a similar arrangement of arched openings. The rear elevation has central garage doors with a taking-in door above and gabled dormer windows.
Stone Cottage has timber-framed walls and stone plinths, with brick skin walls on the exterior elevations and an inserted ceiling of roughly chamfered timbers. Romney Cottage has been remodelled in the 20th century, while the interiors of the other cottages were not accessible during the 1995 survey. The group has significant value alongside Holly Cottage, Beech Cottage, and Roft Lee.
