Description
Roft Castle House is a Grade II listed building in the Regency style, featuring incised stucco and rendered chimneys, some of which are octagonal, along with a slate roof. The house has two storeys and basements that open to a rear sunken courtyard. The entrance front is symmetrical, characterized by deep bracketed eaves, a central projecting bay, and a projecting embattled porch. Each side of the entrance has a bay with one window per floor, and there is a wing set back and attached to the left. The first floor includes mock arrow slits, and all windows on this and the garden elevation are multipane sashes with Gothic glazing details, each with labels.
The garden elevation features two semi-octagonal embattled projecting bays, with the upper floor displaying two blind windows to the left and two sash windows to the right, similar to those on the first floor. The rear elevation facing the sunken courtyard has windows that match those on the other elevations.
Inside, the porch leads to an entrance hall with a staircase that has a wreathed handrail and open string. The doors are in Gothic traceried cases with quatrefoils. The principal rooms are adorned with decorative plaster friezes and simple marble fireplaces. A unique aspect of the layout is the presence of corridors and secondary staircases located behind the main staircase, which are illuminated by internal windows of unusual design. There is also an inscribed date of 1837 on a roof timber.
The building has group value with the Courtyard Walls and Gazebos.
