Description

The Presbytery at the Catholic Cathedral Church of St Mary is a 19th-century building constructed of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, designed in the Gothic style. It has two storeys and features a four-window range with prominent outer gables. The entrance is located in the angle of the central range and the right-hand gable, consisting of an arched doorway set in a chamfered stone architrave beneath a lean-to porch supported by chamfered and braced struts that extend between the two gables.

The ground floor of the left-hand wing has plain narrow lights, while the upper windows are paired foiled lancets. The entrance range also has similar paired windows. The right-hand gable features a canted bay window with transomed lancet lights, topped by triple foiled lancets. All upper windows have pale brick relieving arches above them, and both gables are topped with cross finials. The building has axial and gable end stacks.

On the right return elevation, there are paired foiled lancets on each floor, with the upper windows located beneath a gabled dormer. Beyond this, there is a wide advanced gable with a canted bay window on the ground floor and paired lancets beneath a relieving arch above. A later extension in a similar style is located beyond this gable, featuring a single lancet window and a squared bay window set across the angle.

Inside, the central range is occupied by a full-height stair hall, which includes a heavy chamfered wooden staircase and a balustrade leading to a galleried upper landing. The original layout and some details, such as the joinery and encaustic tiled floor in the entrance hall, have been preserved.
