Description

1 Grosvenor Road is an Italianate villa, also described as Anglo-Italian, built with brick and featuring ashlar dressings, including raised and channelled quoins and a deep modillion cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, with axial stacks that are likely truncated. The building has two storeys, with the main elevations presenting a two-window entrance front to Regent Street and a symmetrical five-window arrangement (1-3-1) also facing Regent Street.

The entrance is located in an advanced porch to the right, featuring a segmental archway between channelled outer piers and fluted Corinthian inner pilasters, leading to a round arched entrance with panelled double doors. Above this, there is a balustraded parapet over a projecting cornice. A channelled architrave frames the ground floor window next to the entrance. The two upper windows are set within round arched architraves, flanked by fluted Corinthian pilasters and topped with scalloped tympana. The left-hand window has a strapwork balconette supported by brackets.

A continuous band of lintel and sill string courses runs between the floors, extending across the Regent Street elevation. This elevation features advanced squared bay windows on either side, separated by Corinthian pilasters that support strapwork balconettes for the upper windows. The central windows are grouped as three within a slightly advanced channelled stone panel, from which moulded brackets support a balconette linking the triple windows above. All first-floor windows are detailed similarly to those on the Grosvenor Road elevation.

At the rear, there is a lower service wing that is recessed, with a hipped roof, a side entrance, and a tripartite sash window above. The eaves overhang on moulded wood brackets. A three-storeyed hipped roof tower, which is a somewhat later addition, is located beyond the service wing. The main facade features a recessed centre panel with paired ground floor windows and smaller lights on the upper floors.
