Description

The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Mary is a Grade II listed building constructed from coursed and squared stone with slate roofs. It features a tower and spire located to the southwest, a nave with two lean-to aisles, a clerestory, and a lower chancel. An additional aisle and side chapel are present on the north side, and the design reflects a late 13th-century style.

The west doorway is set in a steep archway, adorned with shafts and a hood mould, and is flanked by steep pinnacled niches. Above the doorway is a five-light window, while the west walls of the aisles contain two-light windows divided into four bays by buttresses, each featuring two-light geometrical traceried windows beneath angled hood moulds. The clerestory is illuminated by rose windows. The southwest tower and spire include a steep trefoiled window at the base of the tower, a lancet in the upper stage, and paired lights in the bell chamber. The spire is a brooch type, decorated with lucarnes and projecting bands. The chancel boasts a massive trefoiled east window, which includes a rose window with a band of quatrefoil lights below.

Inside, there is an early English arcade of four bays with clustered shafts and hood moulds that create trefoils between each arch. A gallery in the western bay is supported by chamfered timber piers. The clerestory lights are splayed, and the aisle windows feature stilted arches. The wagon roof has wall posts on corbels supporting the principal trusses. The chancel arch is deep and moulded with clustered shafts. Above the chancel arch, painted figures of angels on a gilded ground are set in shallow panels. The lady chapel to the north is accessed through paired narrow arches, and a full-height eastern arch contains a window.

The stained glass in the aisle windows forms a series of memorial windows, which, while unsigned and undated, are reminiscent of the style of Kempe and Tower, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The northwest window may be earlier and features a neo-medieval style with a mosaic of fragments. In the side chapel of the outer north aisle, there is a memorial to Ellan Thompson, who died in 1854, featuring a recumbent effigy on an arched panelled tomb-chest with low-reliefs.
