Description
This multi-purpose farm building at Briwnant Farm is a three-bay cow-house and barn constructed from rubble stone and weather-boarding, topped with a corrugated asbestos-cement roof. The front features three doors, including a raised doorway to the left of center that leads to a threshing passage, which has a late 20th-century door. To the left of this doorway is another entrance set within late 20th-century weather-boarding. To the right of the threshing passage, there is an area of exposed box-framing with weather-boarding above and a loft hatch. Beneath the box-framing is a small infilled window made of stone. On the far right, stable doors provide access to the byre.
The south gable end of the building has slit ventilators and a boarded loft door. Similar slit ventilators and a doorway are located at the rear, with a lower wing at the north end where there was previously a lean-to structure. The north gable end features a window and infilled ventilation slits, while the side of the wing has a door flanked by windows and a loft hatch above.
Inside, there is a central threshing passage with winnowing doors at each end, and some slate slabs remain on the floor. The barn is located to the left, and the byre to the right. There is a separate external doorway leading into the byre, which has a cobbled floor and raised concrete stalls positioned at right angles to the left and right. The stalls, mangers, and hay racks are likely from the early to mid-20th century. The threshing bay may have also served as a feed passage. There is a doorway at the rear of the byre that leads into the wing, which contains additional stalls and a loft above. The building features queen-post roof trusses and stop-chamfered purlins.
