Description

The Barn Range at Ty-Mawr is a farm building that includes both a barn and animal housing. It is constructed from thin coursed grey pennant stone rubble, with a roof that features stone tiles on the lower half and corrugated steel sheeting above. The building has large central threshing doorways; both doors survive on the south side, while only a single door remains on the north side. Adjacent to the south doorway is a lean-to shed with a cobbled floor.

The upper gable end features a square loading doorway with a wooden door, while the lower gable end has pigeon alighting courses at the eaves and a small window with diamond mullions at the apex, suggesting the presence of an internal wooden dovecot. The first-floor window has been reduced in size. The central ground floor doorway is flanked by square windows, which were formerly doors, all with dripmoulds, leading into a cowhouse typical of the local area.

The lower end of the barn has extensions to both the north and south. On the right side, set back, is a large lean-to, possibly from the early 19th century, which includes a window at the upper level and a door and window at ground level. The extension to the right also has a door and window. To the left of the lower gable end is a lean-to, likely from the 18th century, which features a door and window.

The barn itself has a roof with seven bays, supported by trusses that include tie-beams and tall raking Queen struts. The threshing floor is flagged, with a stone wall towards the lower end. The lower end is lofted, with a stone stair leading down to the lower level. The loft is supported by massive beams and was formerly a cowhouse, designed to accommodate cows head-to-head with a central feeding passage.
