Description
The barn at Upper House Farm is a Grade II listed structure built with coursed grey pennant rubble masonry. It features a steeply pitched roof made of corrugated asbestos, with some areas patched with steel sheets. The barn has full height double doors on both the front and rear elevations, which are chevron boarded, along with a half-door to the right on the front. Canopies over the doorways are supported by moulded timber brackets.
On the left side, there is a single ventilation slit for the storage bay, complete with dripstones. The larger storage bay on the right has two tiers of two ventilation slits, although these are obscured by later extensions at the front and rear. The left gable end has three triangular vent holes, with the ground floor obscured by a later lean-to. The imposing downhill right gable end features a single triangular vent above a ventilation slit, also with a dripstone.
Inside, the barn is arranged in four bays, with a central stone flagged threshing floor bordered by kerbstones on the left and a low rubble wall on the right. The roof consists of four bays supported by three tie beam trusses with queen struts. One of the tie beams over the threshing floor is inscribed with "TP 1828 TG". The timbers used are of heavy scantling, designed to support a stone roof, and some of the principals, ties, and purlins likely date back to the 17th century.
