Description
Briwnant Farmhouse is a one-and-a-half storey house built from rubble stone, which has recently been repointed, and features a renewed slate roof. The building has a tall stone star-shaped chimney stack located to the left of the center. It includes late 20th-century two-light wooden casement windows. The front entrance, which has a renewed wooden door, is positioned to the left of the center beneath the chimney stack. There are two windows to the right of the entrance and one to the left in a later eastern unit. A slight mark in the masonry and some possible quoins suggest the original gable end. The upper storey features a gabled dormer to the left of the center with a two-light casement window. The west gable end has a casement window in the attic and a tiny pantry window below, with a new casement window inserted to its left. A massive boulder is set in the northwest angle of the house. The east gable end has a loft-door opening, which is now glazed, below which is a small window that has been reinstated after being blocked by an outside staircase that has since been removed. There is a rear entrance into the eastern unit with a window to its left. Beyond this is a large gabled extension that matches the main range in style, featuring a stone end stack and skylights.
The front entrance, originally located at the eastern end of the building, is now in front of the chimney. Inside, there is a massive fireplace, which is said to have had a domed bread-oven, along with fireplace stairs against the rear wall. The rear wall has been rebuilt, along with the stairs, and no bread oven is visible. There is a small niche in the left jamb of the fireplace. A box-framed partition separates the hall from the outer service rooms to the west. Originally, there were doorways at either end, but the one to the right is now blocked. The outer rooms now serve as the kitchen, which features a large chamfered spine beam resting on a vertical chamfered beam at the eastern end (likely reset) and a stone flagged floor. The added eastern room has a small fireplace that backs onto the hall fireplace, a spine beam with a shallow chamfer, and a boarded late 20th-century ceiling. The box-framed partition continues to the attic storey, where the truss has a central doorway under the collar.
