Description

Oaklands is a pair of houses featuring a distinctive façade made of a mix of buff brick, red brick, and red terracotta, topped with a slate roof adorned with red terracotta Ruabon cresting tiles. The buildings are three stories high with two windows, and the ground floor includes front rooms and a porch that is part of a single-storey range. The porch is notable for its elaborate carved timber pediment, though the entrance and doors have been altered.

The front elevation is enhanced by pairs of red brick piers that rise from the first floor, supported by terracotta corbels shaped like birds. On either side of these piers are windows with arched heads and terracotta keystones. Shorter piers extend from below the second floor sill band, where the second floor is constructed of buff brick and features a red terracotta eaves cornice. A large terracotta plaque in the shape of a shell is centrally placed at the first floor level, with bands of rosettes beneath it; above, at the second floor level, there is a central recess containing a terracotta figure of an owl. The windows of No. 1 are four-pane sashes, while No. 2 has later replacement windows.

The forecourt is enclosed by a red brick wall with terracotta copings, and there are gate piers topped with terracotta ball finials. Inside, No. 1 retains a Ruabon tiled floor in the hall, along with its original plan form, doors, and staircase. No. 2 was not accessible during the survey in October 1994 but has been converted into flats.
