Description
The hearse shed is a building with a rectilinear plan and an extension to the left. It is constructed from uncoursed sandstone rubble with squared quoins and features a slate roof, along with some alterations and additions made of red brick. There is a lateral stack of stone rubble that is placed off-centre and has a later tapered brick stem. The first-floor windows, likely from the early 19th century, have hipped roofs that rise above the eaves line. At the time of inspection, these windows and others were being reconstructed or replaced. The ground floor has undergone alterations and rebuilding, with most openings now blocked. A partially blocked timber mullioned window is visible to the right of the stack, along with an entrance that has a 20th-century door to the right. The rear elevation shows that all windows were being reconstructed and altered during the inspection.
Attached to the east gable end of the shed is a hipped lean-to roof, featuring a slate covering and a dressed chamfered arch opening with pointed boarded doors. Inside, the ground floor has large stop-chamfered cross beams and stop-chamfered secondary beams, with some replacements and repairs. A fireplace with dressed stone jambs and a lintel bears the date 1698 inscribed upon it, located in the front wall. The upper floor includes one lateral timber-framed wall, and a roof truss is partially visible. The tie-beam and some purlins exhibit 17th-century characteristics and are likely reused, while other timbers and iron cramps appear to be from the early 19th century. Additional partitions relate to a conversion that took place in the 1990s.
