Description

24 and 26 High Street are a pair of houses built in the mid-18th century, with a cellar that may date back to the 17th century or earlier. The buildings have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries and are now used as commercial premises.

The houses are made of red brick and topped with a terracotta-tiled roof. They feature a double-depth rectangular plan with a central entrance and a through-passage to the northeast. The structure has two storeys plus an attic, with an earlier stone-built cellar. The main facade is constructed of header-bond red brick and includes a dentilled eaves cornice, while the left side is rendered. The pitched roof has terracotta tiles and a brick chimney on the right side. The front elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a five-window arrangement on the first floor. On the ground floor, there are paired central doorways beneath a timber canopy supported by four moulded brackets, flanked by canted timber oriel shop fronts; the left one is from the early 19th century, and the right is a 20th-century replica. Wide stone steps lead up to the doors, and to the right side, there is a segmental-arched and flagged through-passage. The first floor features gauged brick flat arches with keystones above six-over-six-pane sash windows in exposed frames, with one window blocked in the center. The attic has two 20th-century dormers with terracotta-tile cheeks. Each house extends to the rear under pitched roofs.

Inside, it has been reported that each house contains a central lateral dogleg stair, and number 24 has an original fitted cupboard with glazed doors and fielded panelled side doors in the front ground-floor room.
